Kayaking
on Biwako freshwater in Western Japan |
i |
Info |
The Northwestern part
of Biwako for good reason is popular among kayakers: Very clean water
(Makino
officially ranks among the top 10 beaches in Japan, mainly for its water
quality), an interesting coastline with beautiful mountainous scenery,
the large dimension - not to forget various camp sites and other good
spots for starting and landing/rest. |

In the warm seasons the lake typically features WNW winds, a little in the morning, stronger later from afternoon to dark. Mountains around in the 1000's (meters) and the size of the water mean that wind and relatively small, yet steep waves can build up suddenly. Apart from 2 small ferry lines to Chiku Island, 4-5 Jet skis and a few fisherboats (day and night), there is very little traffic in the Northern part, and I very much recommend paddling a kilometre or more out on a hot day, sit in the water on your life west tied to the boat, have a beer, read a book or do both, and feel a bit like on the ocean. | |
