Little over 2 hours by car from Kobe/Osaka, Ushimado is a calm seaside town on the 'Japanese Mediterranean' and offers beautiful clean waters, handsome islands for a little island-hopping and great places to rest or stay.

With the main islands Maejima, Aoshima, Kishima, Kuroshima, and further West Inushima the Ushimado area seems to be made for kayaking and definitely is our favourite for a relaxed paddling-weekend. The kayak rental 'Watertrail' (plenty of information in Japanese about the area) is located right next to one of the 'Okayama International Villas', about 2 km up the hillAbut you don't have to walk up there, as the starting point mainly is at Sunbeach - a nice quite beach campsite on Maeshima (10 min. by ferry from Ushimado). Most of the time we simply set up our boats on Ushimado Beach and think during off-season this is a good starting point, too: There is a pleasant car park with public toilet & washing basin right behind the scenic beach. You have a huge variety of possible courses around the islands just ahead, with Maejima serving as an extended emergency outpost, due to its ferry connection. Reaching out East to Nezumishima, West to Inushima and beyond, South to Shodoshima and even Shikoku, you have no problem filling a considerable number of days exploring the area.
